WIPpet Wednesday: It is real

WIPpetWedWhat’s WIPpet Wednesday?
Wednesday is for the day of the week I (and others) share a WIPpet.  The word WIPpet is the joining of the word snippet with the acronym WIP, which stands for Work In Progress.  Using the date to conjure up a math formula, WIPpeteers (the group of people that share WIPpets) figure out how much to share.

My WIPpet Math
The date is 3/5/2014.  Let’s get math messy!  Let’s use 1 + 2 + 0 = 3 for our paragraphs.  Then 3 + 5 + 4 = 12 and that will be our page.

What’s My WIPpet?
Again we continue to read from my MG novel, GRANDMA.  George had a major freak out that landed Lizzie on her butt.  She’s just getting back up…

This Week’s WIPpet
But, you know what all this pain was useful for? It reminded me that this wasn’t a dream. This was real. Not a dream. Not a blockbuster movie. Not some story a lady at the library was reading. This was real. This was happening.

I had to make it more real. “There’s a giant tree growing in Grandma’s entry.” There, I said it. The strange and impossible had been put into words.

Then, I touched it, so that it really sunk in. It was incredibly smooth. Despite the rough looking texture full of browns, blacks, and grays, there was no bumps or jagged edges. Nothing snagged at my fingertips or tried to pull at my flesh.

KL Schwengel runs the show.

  1. Oooh, kinda creepy! I like how the pain makes it real, like when you pinch yourself if you think you’re dreaming.

    • I added the pain bit this draft. I was thinking along the same lines as you said there. It seemed like a good opportunity.

  2. Intriguing. I’m not quite sure what’s going on but it seems something fantastical is taking place.

    • Actually, your feelings are what I was trying to evoke. Hopefully, even with more context/words, the readers will feel like you do.

  3. I wonder how the tree got there. Intriguing!

    • I think that’s what both George and Lizzie are wondering deep down. But, they’re a bit too shocked to get there just yet. 😉

  4. Way cool! I love the working title, “Grandma.” Makes me smile. Love your narrative voice, too – very compelling and perfect for MG.

    • Grandma will likely end up in the final title, just not sure what that will be. 😉 I’m doing my best to stay in a young voice. I do catch myself slipping every now and again, though.

  5. I know that totally surreal feeling, like, “I read about this thing happening to someone else. It doesn’t happen to me.” (or it shouldn’t.)

  6. I love that the tree has an unexpected texture. 🙂 I have a friend who can make something three-dimensional look two-dimensional and vice-versa. His art, along with some of the squishy-looking concrete items in Toontown always fascinated me. I never pursued the science of illusion, but it sure is a fun discipline.

    • There’s a reason for the texture, too! This was one of those 2nd draft a-ha moments.

I love when appearances deceive… Well, in good ways. If it looks like chocolate and I eat… It better be chocolate. (Never happened to me nor would I want it to!)

      • LOL Oh, no kidding. I once heard of a youth group leader who showed up at a poutluck with a dish that ammounted to an enormous ice cream sundae to share. Only, when people started eating it, it turned out to be mashed potatoes with hot fudge and whipped cream.

  7. I love the tree being where it shouldn’t be. A truly surreal moment. Well done.

  8. Why do I get this strange impression that Grandma is a witch? (must be reading too much fantasy these days… nah; not possible 😀 )

    • Grandma is not a witch. But, Grandma is… Hmmm, I wonder if I’ll finish editing this before we get to the part about what did happen to Grandma.

(And totally agree that there is no thing as too much fantasy!)

      • Oh, you should definitely lave us wondering what happened to Grandma, but it’s still fun guessing.

        A dryad? 😉

Saying things out loud always makes them more potent, doesn’t it? It takes them out of the realm of being something that’s just in your head and gives them as much solidity as that tree. Grandma’s house has some explaining to do!

    • Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. I also thought it was a good way to transition her from “reacting to” to “trying to over come” the situation.
